The following are general guidelines for Running Start:

  • Students must follow the enrollment process on the Community College website (see local college links below).
  • Running Start students are only allowed on CHS campus for the periods in which they have a CHS class, or to recieve breakfast or lunch.
  • Tuition costs for up to 18 community college credits are paid for by the State of Washington. Students are responsible for fees and books.  Students who are enrolled in our free or reduced lunch program within the last 5 years are able to have the fees waived and can get some assistance with books.
  • Coursework is more intense and more material is covered in a shorter period of time at the college.
  • The rules of confidentiality and attendance reporting are different than the high school. A college has no obligation to provide progress reports or to report a lack of attendance. Grades will only be issued to the student.
  • The college calendar is different from the high school calendar. A college student may be required to attend class during a public high school vacation.
  • Students may not arrive late or leave a high school class early to attend at the community college. Appropriate travel periods must be factored into the student's high school schedule.
  • Capital High School classes are a priority when it comes to scheduling Running Start classes. The expectation is that college classes will be arranged around year-long required classes at the high school.
  • It is the Running Start student's responsibility to adhere to the Capital High School Course Transfer Guidelines in regards to Capital High School graduation requirement equivalencies.
