Transfers

New and renewal transfer requests are now being accepted for the 2024-25 school year.

Who Needs to Submit a Transfer Request?

Any student desiring to attend (or continue to attend) school in the Olympia School District, outside of their regular attendance area, must apply for a transfer. Parents and legal guardians need to submit their student’s name(s) to the district (via this link) to be considered for transfer.

How Do I Know if We Need a Transfer Request?

If you are new to the area and would like to know what school/district boundary your residence is assigned to, please follow the link below. Simply enter your home address in the search field.

This search will help you determine which school is assigned to your residence area. If you do not wish to have your student attend the school assigned to your residence area, then you must submit a transfer request.

Different Types of Transfers

New in-district transfer request

The first time a parent or legal guardian submits a request for their student to attend a school outside of their regular attendance area within the Olympia School District a new transfer request must be submitted.

New out-of-district transfer request

If a student resides outside of the Olympia School District and would like to attend a school within the OSD, they must submit a new transfer request via the form below.

If the transfer is approved, the parent or legal guardian must request to be released from their resident school by submitting a Choice Transfer Request form via the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction website.

Washington State Choice Transfer Portal

To complete a Choice Transfer Request via the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) website simply follow the link below. This form will need to be completed annually.

Student is “Moving Up” (from Preschool to Kindergarten, Fifth to Sixth grade or Eighth to Ninth grade)

If your student currently attends a school that is outside of their attendance area via a transfer and will be “moving up” to a new school next year. This is not required if the student will be attending the school assigned to their regular attendance area.

Renewal Transfer Request (in-district and out-of-district)

If a student is already attending a school via a transfer request, the parent or legal guardian must submit a transfer renewal request form to remain at that school for the following school year. This applies to both in-district and out-of-district students. For students attending an OSD school via a transfer, they must submit a renewal request annually.

Please Note: Transfer students are not guaranteed enrollment from year to year, but the intent is for students to continue year to year in the school where accepted.

Do I have the option to choose more than one school?

Yes. On the form there is an option to choose a school for your first choice and your second choice. We will do our best to place your student in the school you choose first and if we are unable to, we will look at your second choice.

Will my student qualify for transportation if we are granted a new or renewed transfer request?

No. Parents or guardians are responsible for transportation of their students who voluntarily attend a school outside of their resident attendance area.

Will I be notified of the status of my request?

Yes. The Elementary and Secondary Education Departments (in collaboration with the schools) will determine if they are able to approve, deny or add your student’s name to a waitlist. Decisions will be made with consideration to space and/or program capacity.

Once a determination is made, the district office will contact the parent or legal guardian via email. In the event your request is added to a waitlist the district will contact you if space and/or program capacity becomes available.

We live in the Olympia School District but want our student to attend a school in another Washington State school district. What do we do?

Once your request to attend another school district has been submitted and approved, you will need to submit a request to be released from the Olympia School District via the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction site:

What if I want to request a transfer for the rest of the 2023-24 school year?

Please use this Google Form to submit a new transfer request for the remainder of the 2023-2024 school year. The Elementary and Secondary Education Departments (in collaboration with the schools) will determine if they are able to approve, deny or add your student’s name to a waitlist as soon as possible. Decisions will be made with consideration to space and/or program capacity.

Once a determination is made, the district office will contact the parent or legal guardian via email. In the event your request is added to a waitlist, the district will contact you if space and/or program capacity becomes available via email.

Important Information

Griffin and McCleary Students

Griffin and McCleary students do not need to apply to attend Capital High School. They do need to go through the application process for Olympia High School by submitting a new transfer request, which will then add them to the waitlist.

OSD students will be enrolled prior to other out-of-district students, but not before a Capital High School student wishing to attend Olympia High School. Once a student is enrolled in an OSD high school, that school will become their home high school for four years. Students are not required to apply each year.

Transportation is provided for Griffin students to attend Capital High School. If a Griffin or McCleary student wishes to enroll at ORLA or Avanti, they will need to go through the established application process for these schools. Shelton students attending Griffin will need to apply to attend an OSD school as a nonresident student.

Important things to consider before submitting a transfer request

Due to varying enrollment, not every school in the OSD is open for Within District (Resident) and/or Out-of-District (Non-resident) transfers. Requests are granted based on capacity of the requested school, grade level and services needed.

A student shall attend the school designated for the student’s area of residence, as defined in Policy 3130. Student's school and resident school district is based on where the student resides. Approval or denial of a transfer request is based on criteria outlined in OSD Board Policy 3131 for resident students and Policy 3141 for nonresident students. All transfer requests will be handled at the district office.

Optional Programs

These transfer steps do not apply to students seeking enrollment at Lincoln Options (Lincoln ES), HAP (Hansen ES), JAMS (Jefferson MS), Marshall CSI (Marshall MS), Reeves RAMS (Reeves MS) unless the student seeks to attend that school in the general population. Please see the Educational Programs section of our website for more details on how to apply to these specific programs.

Please Note: Olympia Regional Learning Academy and Avanti High School have an established application process. Please visit their school websites for details.
