Important Attendance Information

To report absences/late arrival/early dismissal: (360-596-8019)

  • Students full name with spelling of the last name 
  • Reason for absence/tardy/early release
  • Your name and relationship to student 
  • Please call at least 45 minutes PRIOR to early dismissal.

In order for your student to be EXCUSED they must sign out and in at the attendance office or their absence will be marked as unexcused.

Health Room News

If your child will be taking medication when school begins next fall, a new Authorization for Administration of Medication at School form is required. The new authorization form must be completed and signed by both you and your child’s health care provider, and brought to school with the prescribed medication. By law, no medication may be administered without a current, completed, and signed authorization form.
In case of an emergency situation when students must remain for an extended period of time, you will need to provide the school with a three (3) day supply of medications and indicate on the authorization form the procedure for administering the medication over a 24-hour period.

CHS Career Center


Some of the things we hear from students about financial aid in the Career Center.... 

“My parents make too much money, so I won’t qualify for aid.” 
“Only students with good grades get financial aid.” 
“The FAFSA  is too hard to fill out.” 

These myths are incorrect, don’t make assumptions about what you’ll get!  Fill out the application and find out! Complete your FAFSA online at https://studentaid.ed.gov/sa/fafsa. When you fill out this form, you’re also automatically applying for funds from your state, and possibly from your school as well. In fact, some schools and organizations won’t even consider you for their scholarships (including the CHS Foundation) until you’ve submitted a FAFSA.

If you are planning on attending any post-secondary education after high school you NEED to fill out the FAFSA immediately. Non-citizen students who meet income and residency requirements can complete the WASFA at https://readysetgrad.wa.gov/wasfa.  


It’s never too early or too late to take a look at scholarships as an option to assist in paying for your post-high school education. The winter/spring is when the Career Center receives numerous privately funded scholarships; most local opportunities are seen during this time frame. Local scholarships are offered by local service clubs, local businesses and private foundations. Scholarships are rolling into the Career Center!! The monthly scholarship list is available in the Career Center or on our website.
Many scholarships require a letter of recommendation from an employer, teacher, counselor or community mentor. This is the item that holds most students up from completing the application. Be sure to give that person enough time to write a quality letter for you. Scholarships usually require an essay about a specific topic or your plans for the future (most essays are 500 words or less). Average time to complete a scholarship application is approximately 2 hours, most scholarships provide awards on average of $1000, a great investment in your time for the money!! Most applications are not accepted because the instructions were NOT FOLLOWED.

Winter break is a great time to work on your resume so you will be prepared this spring to line up that summer job!  The Career Center can help you create an awesome resume and cover letter. Stop by for help during your lunch or Coug Time.


Learning more about yourself and making a difference in your community by providing volunteer service in an industry of interest to you is a great way to explore prospective careers. There are numerous opportunities available in a variety of settings around Thurston County. Stop by the Career Center to take a look at current volunteer opportunities and find out how you can be an active member of your community.
Volunteer experience can help you learn valuable skills that can translate to a JOB!  Volunteering may also help you earn scholarships as MOST of them are based on your level of community service & leadership.  The Career Center has a bulletin board full of options. Stop by the Career Center to find out more.


Most Seniors met one-on-one with Bridget in September to log into their Career Cruising account, review their HSBP, and learn about the additional requirements needed to complete their plan.
Mrs. Elam and Mrs. Morgan then visited with all seniors in their classroom in November to discuss the requirements of the HSBP. Counselors have also told their students of the requirements and numerous emails have also been sent out to seniors, as well as some Skyward messages. Please make sure your Senior knows this is due at the end of January and is working on it.
The requirements are:
 All seniors must be at 95% in their Career Cruising account by the end of January. This includes
uploading an updated resume and cover letter.
Once seniors have completed the requirements and their plan has been reviewed, a Senior Exit Interview will be scheduled.  This is the final step in their HSBP.

Juniors and Sophomores will be receiving their HSBP lessons in January and February from Ms. Elam.

Mrs. Grabski taught half of the Freshman their HSBP lesson in their health class in September and the other half will be receiving it in February. Mrs. Grabski and Mrs. Turcotte have developed lessons around the HSBP to connect HSBP to assignments in Health Class.

Counseling Center News

PSAT Results.  Scores from the PSAT/NMSQT will be released online to students December 9–11. Students who are at least 13 years old and who shared their email address on their PSAT/NMSQT answer sheet, will receive an email reminder from College Board explaining where and how to view their scores. Those students should create a College Board account so they can easily access their scores once they're released online and unlock a robust set of personalized resources to help them understand their scores. If a student doesn't see their scores when they log in, they may need to enter an access code. Your school counselor now has those access codes if needed. 
Save the date: February 6th --9th / 10th / 11th Grade Family Information Night.  5:30 - 7:30 pm at CHS.  This event is designed to help communicate the academic options available to students as well as provide knowledge on future planning. This is an invaluable resource for families as students as they develop and choose their classes for next year. The night will begin by showcasing our new class offerings, providing access to our course catalog, providing important updates and answering questions. This will be followed by a number of breakout sessions to include: 

  • Running Start, 
  • International Baccalaureate, 
  • New Market Skills Center, 
  • Apprenticeship programs, 
  • 2 year and 4 year college admissions,  
  • Financial Aid, 
  • Beginning the college application process

Starting March 2nd -- Junior Registration/Credit Checks.  Juniors will be assigned an individual appointment with their counselor to register for their courses for the 2020-21 school year.  They will receive their registration materials earlier in February along with a presentation explaining our process. Students will need parent signatures on the forms to approve their desired schedule.  Counselors will be in contact with parents/guardians if a major change is needed.

Capital High School Parent Organization


Who are we?

  • We are a group of parents who work together to enrich our students' high school experience. 
  • We promote communication between the school and families.
  • We facilitate parent involvement in school-wide community events.
  • We raise and allocate funds for a wide variety of educational programs and teacher grants.

When do we meet?

  • We meet the 1st Monday of the month, September (second Monday due to Labor Day) through June, from 6:30 to 8:00 pm in the CHS Library.  
  • All meetings are attended by Michelle Anderson, Vice Principal, who updates us on what's happening at Capital during the respective month. 

Volunteer Opportunities

  • We provide parent volunteer opportunities in conjunction with the school, helping staff many different activities including:
  • Father/Daughter Dance (February)
  • Arts Recognition Night (May)
  • Staff Appreciation Breakfasts (quarterly)
  • Teacher Luncheon (last day of school)
  • and more events that need parent involvement

Where does the money go?

  • Our major fundraiser, the Father/Daughter Dance, helps raise funds for teacher grants which have allowed us to purchase such things as a spot welder for Woodshop along with safety goggles, educational programs for English classes and material for the Science curriculum. 
  • We support the School Climate Fund which involves activities and events that help address the school's social environment. 
  • We fund special requests from the school Administration and provide funds as needed for student needs

$20 annual membership fee which helps fund the above mentioned charitable donations to the school. 
We are a non-profit 501 (c)(3) charitable organization registered with the State of Washington.
