Purpose: The purpose of this course is to provide students with the knowledge necessary to make informed personal health decisions. The student will gain knowledge to understand the impact of stress, nutrition, drug and alcohol use and the normal growth process can have on one’s health. The student will have an awareness of the importance of positive lifestyle choices and take responsibility for one’s own health and wellness.

Course Objectives: At the conclusion of this course students will:

  1. Be able to describe various components of “health” and “wellness”
  2. Be familiar with techniques for making behavior changes
  3. Understand the importance of psychosocial health as it affects relationships with others
  4. Be familiar with characteristics of healthy relationships
  5. Have and understanding of the importance of nutrition and physical activity, and how it relates to managing a health body weight.
  6. Understand the dangers of drug and alcohol use and abuse
  7. Be able to identify common infectious and noninfectious diseases, and techniques for managing the risk of developing these diseases.
  8. Be able to make informed decisions regarding issues that affect their health.


Grading and Absentee policies:

Everyone enters the class with an “A”. However, this is not a correspondence class. Plan to be in class so that your grade will not suffer. There are certain activities and assignments that may not be recreated or made up. You must have an entrance slip from the attendance office to enter the class if you are tardy. If you are absent when a regular assignment/project is due, you must turn in the assignment/project when you return to class. If you are absent because of a school related activity, you are still responsible for material covered in class and you must turn in your assignments on time.


Classroom Requirements:

  1. You will need a 3 ring binder, pen/pencil, paper and all Health materials everyday. You may have a section designated for health in your big 3-ring binder.
  2. All standard attendance policies and school rules will be followed. Any lunch detention or ISS time will be served immediately.

Grading Scale

93-100%= A                           77-79%= C+

90-92%= A-                           73-76%= C

87-89%= B+                           70-72%= C-

83-86%= B                             67-69%= D+

80-82%=B-                             60-66%= D

                                                59% or below=F

Expectations and responsibilities


  • Speak and act with respect for others
  • Raise your hand and wait to be called on before you speak
  • Accept other people’s right to their opinions
  • Support other people’s right to express their opinions
  • No degrading, derogatory comments about race, religion, sexuality, socio-economic status etc. will be tolerated.
  • Use acceptable classroom language
  • Accept responsibility and consequences for your actions

Contribute positively to class at all times!

  • Make your presence benefit the class
  • Provide assistance to other students
  • Avoid interfering with other student’s education


  • Comply with requests and directions of the teacher the first time you are asked.
  • Maintain a clean and healthy classroom environment
  • No hoods on in class
  • UNPLUG! No cell phones or ipods during class. They must be turned off and put away.
