Use the Deco Tool with Imported Graphics

 

OBJECTIVE:

In this lesson, you will use the Deco tool to create and animate decorative patterns.

 

Lesson:  Creating a screen design with the Deco tool

  1. Open fl7.fla, then save it as deco 1.Fla—this document has an imported graphic (rose.jpg) that has been converted to a graphic symbol
  2. Click the Deco tool on the Tools panel, then display the Properties panel
  3. Verify that your settings are:
    Vine Fill
    Leaf:  check Default shape
    Flower:  check Default shape
    Branch Angle:  0 CW
    Pattern Scale:  100%
    Segment Length:  5.75 px
    Frame Step:  0
  4. Click the Stage to create the design
  5. Click Edit on the menu bar, then click Undo Deco Tool
  6. Click the Deco tool, then click the Edit button in the Properties panel Flower area
  7. Click rose in the Swap Symbol dialog box, then click OK
  8. Point to the middle of the Stage, then click then click the mouse button
  9. Test the movie and notice that there is no animation, then close the Flash Player window
  10. Click Edit on the menu bar, click Undo Deco Tool, then click the Deco tool
  11. Click the Animate pattern click box in the ADVANCED OPTIONS area of the Properties panel to select it, point to the middle of the Stage, then click the mouse button—notice the keyframes on the timeline
  12. Test the movie, notice the animation, then close the Flash Player window
  13. Save your work, then close the document

Summary:  You created a design with the Deco tool, swapped graphics, then animated the design.

 

Lesson:  Using the Symmetry brush

  1. Open fl7_1fla, then save it as deco2.fla
  2. Verify the Deco tool is selected, click the list arrow in the DRAWING EFFECT area, then click Symmetry Brush
  3. Click the Edit button for Module in the DRAWING EFFECT area, verify rose is selected in the Swap Symbol dialog box, then click OK
  4. Point to above the vertical handle, then click to display the circle of roses
  5. Point to between the open circle and the + on the diagonal handle, when the pointer changes to a delta symbol, slowly drag the pointer to the left to display more roses, then release the mouse button
  6. Click the Selection tool on the Tools panel, then draw a marquee around the roses to select them
  7. Click Modify on the menu bar, click convert to Symbol, name the symbol, circle-of-roses, select Graphic as the type, then click OK
  8. Create a motion tween and increase the tween span on the Timeline to 40
  9. Use the Properties panel to set the rotation to 30 and the direction to CW
  10. Test the movie, close the Flash Player window, save your work, close the document, then exit Flash

Summary:  You used the Symmetry brush to create a circle of graphic symbols, change the number of  symbols, and animate the circle.
