Algebra 2 Syllabus
Textbook  Secondary Three Mathematics: An Integrated Approach; The Mathematics Vision Project; ©2013
Supplies  For this class you will need the following supplies:

a package of college or wide rule paper

some pencils and pens

graph paper

a scientific calculator (no graphing calculators, please)
Assessments  We will have an exam at the end of each unit of study. We may also have periodic quizzes to check how things are going. Points will be given for both showing reasonable work and getting a correct answer. There will be a comprehensive exam at the end of each semester. All of the topics that were covered during that semester will be assessed.
Retakes  Any test during the course of the semester may be retaken subject to the following guidelines:

You may only retake two tests during each semester
 Retakes will be scheduled by the teacher for a given day
 You will need to demonstrate that you have improved your understanding in order to earn the privilege of a retake

Your new test score will replace the original exam

There are no retakes on final exams

If you are absent when the first test is given, the retake is your only opportunity
Classroom Activities  This curriculum incorporates classroom activities into the learning of the various concepts. These activities are critical to assisting students in their understanding of the content, its development, and its relationship to other topics in mathematics. Most activities will involve both an individual component and a collaborative component, so it is important that students are available to participate.
Homework  You should expect homework assignments most nights, and it is critical that you do not fall behind. The previous night's homework will be reviewed in class daily. There will be an opportunity to ask questions each day and I invite you to do so since questioning is a vital part of the problem solving process. Your textbook is in a 3ring binder, and you should keep your homework in that binder along with the corresponding lesson. Each Tuesday there will be a homework quiz which will contain one question from each of the previous weeks assignments, and this will be used to determine homework credit for the previous week.
Grades & Grading scale  The following percentages comprise your class grade:

Tests & Quizzes = 80%
 Classroom Activities = 10%

Homework = 10%
All grades will be determined using the following scale:

Because of the opportunities for retakes, I will NOT round up your overall percentage (no matter how close you are to the next grade!) If you have truly given your best effort, then you should be proud of the grade you have earned.

Classroom Rules 
The rationale for any classroom policy is to maintain the integrity
of the academic environment. There are some specific rules that are schoolwide and will be enforced:
 In an effort to combat cyberbullying, cell phone usage during class is prohibited and will result in the confiscation of your phone (even if it is your mother texting you...)
 Food and drink (with the exception of water) will not be permitted in class
 Plagiarism and cheating will be dealt with in a manner that fits the situation, and the incident will go into your student record
 Otherwise, feel free to do anything you want provided it does not cause a
problem for anyone else.
 If you cause such a problem, then I will ask you to fix it.
 If you are unable or unwilling to fix it, then I will determine consequences based on your unique situation after some consideration.
Absence Policy 
1) Make every effort to be in class, ontime each day
 absences and tardies make it much harder to be successful
 tardies will be dealt with under the new school policy
2) If you have a prearranged absense, please see me beforehand so we can find a way to plan for what you will miss.

Check the calendar for the assignments when you return
4) If you are confused about something we studied or just need some time to work, I am available for help before school at 7:15 each morning and many days after school also. I will be unavailable on some occasions due to other responsibilities.
