LT1 - Multiple Intelligences

What kind of “smart” are you?

#1  What has been your favorite class so far in high school or middle school?  ________________________

Why was it your favorite?  Was it the teacher?  Was it the subject matter?  Was it the physical setting the class took place in?  Was it the friends you had in class?  Describe in a full paragraph below:  (remember: topic sentence, supporting details, concluding sentence)

What has been the class that you’ve learned the most content in?

Why do you think you learned more in this class than in others?  Was it the subject matter?  Was it the teacher?  Was it the physical setting?  Describe briefly below:

#2  Howard Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences

Did you know that most of your teachers have been trained about a theory called Multiple Intelligences?  Read below to learn about this theory and as you’re reading, think about why this information would be helpful for a teacher and his/her students.

“The theory of multiple intelligences was developed in 1983 by Dr. Howard Gardner, professor of education at Harvard University. It suggests that the traditional notion of intelligence, based on I.Q. testing, is far too limited. Instead, Dr. Gardner proposes eight different intelligences to account for a broader range of human potential in children and adults. These intelligences are:

       Linguistic intelligence

       Logical-mathematical intelligence

       Spatial intelligence

       Bodily-Kinesthetic intelligence

       Musical intelligence

       Interpersonal intelligence

Intrapersonal intelligence

       Naturalist intelligence”

from www.thomasarmstrong.com/multiple_intelligences.htm

Wikipedia, though debated for its ability to edit content, actually does a great job explaining these 8 different intelligences as well as 2 other that Gardner has decided won’t work.  Please look up Multiple Intelligences on Wikipedia, read about each intelligence and draw a symbol to represent each intelligence below.

#3  Based on the explanations and thinking back to your favorite class and the class you’ve learned the most in, what would you say is your strongest intelligence?  Weakest?  Order them from strongest to weakest below:

Next, please go to www.bgfl.org/bgfl/custom/resources_ftp/client_ftp/ks3/ict/multiple_int/index.htm

and take their Multiple Intelligence test.  Print out the results page.  Were you surprised?

#4  Not only is it important for you to realize your strongest intelligences, but I think it equally important to realize the intelligences of the people you interact with the most.  How could your awareness of multiple intelligences affect your overall life?   Please give me one short term idea or example and one long term idea or example where you could take this information and apply it to something you are involved in such as classes, work, friendships, family life, etc.
