The CHS community inspires all learners to think, explore, and grow.
SECTION 1 - INTRODUCTION:
Capital High School is a comprehensive high school serving 1,400 students. Our primary focus of the school year will be to more fully engage all of our students through Powerful Teaching and Learning. We will also support Professional Learning Communities through department collaboration and interdisciplinary study team collaboration.

SECTION 3 - Action Plans
Overarching instructional and support umbrellas:
Implement Powerful Teaching and Learning to do the following:
- Increase critical thinking skills in all classes
- Address rigor, reflection, relevance and relationships
- Support students of poverty, English language learners, and special education students
Implement Professional Learning Communities on many levels:
- Peer support for Powerful Teaching and Learning
- Implement professional reading groups
- Examine grading practices
- Support reading, writing, and math across the curriculum
- Support cross curricular study teams to research best practices
- Provide time for departments to improve student learning

- We have trained 18 teachers in Powerful Teaching and Learning. These teachers are using their enhanced skills to more fully engage students in their learning. We have over 25 more teachers eager to pursue this in 2009-10.

- We will continue to focus on Powerful Teaching and Learning.
We have also established several cross-curricular study teams in the following areas:
- Establishing relevance for students

GOAL AREA 1: READING
Continuing strategies:
- Support Powerful Teaching and Learning and Professional Learning Communities
- Target assistance for students who have not passed the WASL
- Continue Read 180 and Reading Essentials
- Support reading across curricular areas through staff training
- Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of multiple levels of students
- Support students in completing a Collection of Evidence
- Address the learning needs of students of poverty

GOAL AREA 2: MATHEMATICS

- Explore additional classes of math to meet the third required year of math
- Support math across curricular areas through staff training
- Differentiate instruction to meet the needs of multiple levels of students
- Explore common assessments
- Analyze WASL data to determine content and process strands to address areas of weakness
- Continue Segmented Math courses to support students who have not passed the math WASL
- Continue Pre-Algebra classes with the purpose of preparing students to be successful in Algebra and Geometry
- Address the learning needs of students of poverty

- We have combined our Parent Site-Based Team and our Teacher School Improvement Team and invited students. We will include classified staff this coming year as well.
- Continue to improve CHS website to communicate with parents

- Involve community members in our Culminating Project presentations
- Work with all parent groups and community to support the mission of our school
