The Capital High School Playmakers present their 2009-2010 Theatrical Season!
URINETOWN: The Musical
One of the most uproariously funny musicals in recent years, URINETOWN is a hilarious tale of greed, corruption, love, and revolution in a time when water is worth its weight in gold. In a Gotham-like city, a terrible water shortage, caused by a 20-year draught, has led to a government-enforced ban on private toilets. The citizens must use public amenities, regulated by a single malevolent company that profits by charging admission for one of humanity's most basic needs. Amid the people, a hero decides he's had enough, and plans a revolution to lead them all to freedom! Inspired by the works of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill, URINETOWN is an irreverently humorous satire in which no one is safe from scrutiny. Praised for reinvigorating the very notion of what a musical could be, URINETOWN catapults the “comedic romp” into the new millennium with its outrageous perspective, wickedly modern wit, and sustained ability to produce gales of unbridled laughter.

The creative team responsible for a recent Broadway flop (in which three chorus girls were murdered by the mysterious “Stage Door
Slasher”) assemble for a backer’s audition of their new show at the Westchester estate of a wealthy “angel.” The house is complete with
sliding panels and secret passageways – all of which figure diabolically in the comic mayhem that follows when the infamous “Slasher” makes his reappearance and strikes again – and again. As the composer, lyricist, actors and director prepare their performance, and a blizzard cuts off any possible retreat, bodies start to drop in plain sight, knives spring out of nowhere, masked figures drag their victims behind swiveling bookcases, and accusing fingers point in all directions. However, and with no thanks to the bumbling police inspector who snowshoes in to investigate, the mystery is solved in the nick of time and the “Slasher” is unmasked!
This production is a joint project with the DECA organization of CHS.

Broadway’s legendary Tony Award winning musical has been specially adapted to meet the
needs of younger performers. This author-approved edition has been
abridged to a running time of just over two hours, while carefully
maintaining the integrity of one the greatest musicals ever written.
This
epic story recounts the struggle against adversity in 19th century
France. Imprisoned for stealing a loaf of bread, petty thief Jean
Valjean is released from his 19-year term and not only becomes and
honest man, but the mayor of a prosperous town and a loving adoptive
father - violating his parole in the process. The relentless Inspector
Javert, who makes a decent life for Valjean impossible, consequently
pursues him. Only years later, after Valjean proves his mettle during a
bloody student uprising and saves the life of a young man hopelessly in
love with Valjean’s adopted daughter, does the ex-convict finally feel
fully redeemed.
