Navigation Advisory
Capital High School is excited about introducing the Navigation 101 (NAV 101) coursework into each student's advisory period.
Navigation 101 is based on the ASCA National Model and the National Career Development Guidelines
and is sponsored by the Washington State Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction.
CLEAR, CAREFUL, AND CREATIVE PLANNING FOR LIFE BEYOND HIGH SCHOOL
- CAREER DEVELOPMENT: What do I want to do in the future?
- ACADEMIC DEVELOPMENT: What have I accomplished in school this year?
- PERSONAL & SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT: Who am I?
Navigation 101 is an advisory-based program that helps students in grades 9 through 12 with planning and life skills. It aims to:Enhance student achievement. Encourage student engagement. Involve parents and guardians. Strengthen community.
PORTFOLIO PLANNERS TO ORGANIZE WORK: Students organize work samples in portfolios. The portfolios guide the student-led conferences. Capital High School will begin using these conferences for the current freshman class. They will be held in the spring. Students will be inviting parents/guardians/significant adults in their lives to participate.
COURSE SELECTION, POSTSECONDARY PLANNING: Students are encouraged to select challenging courses each year and to plan for postsecondary education.
ACADEMIC IMPROVEMENT: Students make annual short-term, long-term, and academic improvement plans; and set goals for the year ahead.
INTEREST AND APTITUDE SURVEYS: Students assess their interests and aptitudes to make connections between what they are doing now and what they want to do in the future.
EXPLORATION OF EDUCATIONAL NEEDS: Students explore the postsecondary education needed to achieve their dreams and goals.
WORKPLACE EXPERIENCE: Students learn from trusted adults, and have the opportunity to engage in job shadows and internships.
COMMUNITY-BUILDING AND LEADERSHIP: Through their advisories, students are encouraged to get involved in school activities, mentor younger students, and learn more about opportunities within the community for volunteering.
STUDENT-LED CONFERENCES: Each year, students present their portfolios, course plans, and goals to their parents and advisors. With the beginning of this curriculum, only the freshman class will be having the conferences this school year. Each year, we will continue adding the incoming freshman groups.
SERVICE-LEARNING,CULMINATING PROJECT: Students have the opportunity to learn more about community service and their culminating projects. Each senior has been assigned a staff member who will serve as their contact.
