2.     Read it thoroughly and select scholarships for which you would like to apply

3.     Locate the applications in top 3 file drawers marked “Scholarship Applications”

DUE DATE:  January 9, 2009

NAME:  Elks Most Valuable Student

AWARD:  494 @ $4,000 – 2 @ $20,000 - 2 @ $40,000 – 2 @ $60,000 

CRITERIA:  Seniors only; U.S. citizen; Boys & Girls will compete separately for identical awards.  Based on financial need, leadership, & academics.  Students may also go online to www.elks.org/enf/scholars/mvs.cfm and download an application and directions. Student must deliver completed application before 6 PM, January 9, 2009, to the Elks Lodge #186 at 1818 E. 4th Ave. (across from Ralph’s Thriftway) Olympia, WA.  This is a great local scholarship that CHS students have won before.

NAME: Gates Millennium Scholars - African-American, American Indian/Alaska Native, Asian Pacific Islander American, or Hispanic

AWARD: 20,000 scholarships @ the amount to be calculated by the Gates Millennium Scholars based on financial need.  The award will cover tuition, fees, books and living expenses.

CRITERIA:  African-American, American Indian / Alaska Native, *Asian Pacific Islander American (*for an explanation of what this includes go to www.gmsp.org/GMSP_App/ ) or Hispanic graduating senior with cumulative GPA of 3.3 or higher.  Must be a citizen, national or permanent residents of the United States and be enrolling for the first time at a U. S. accredited college or university as a full-time, degree seeking, first year student in fall 2009.  Must have demonstrated leadership abilities through participation in community service, extracurricular, or other activities.  Must meet the federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria (must file a FAFSA form for this), and have completed and submitted all three required forms (Nominee personal Information Form, Nominator Form, and Recommender Form) by the deadline.  Nomination materials must be submitted online before Monday, January 12, 2009 11:59 pm EST or postmarked on or before January 12, 2009.  For more information go to: www.gmsp.org, or if you think you meet the criteria and wish to be nominated and apply, see your counselor right away (this scholarship takes time).

NAME:  Washington NASA Space Grant - University of Washington

AWARD:  $1,000 to $5,500 full or partial tuition, renewable for one year. 

CRITERIA: High school seniors planning to study science, technology, engineering, or mathematics at the University of Washington in the fall. Washington State resident and U.S. Citizen.  Selected students become part of a community of scholars, are involved in many Space Grant activities, and are eligible to participate in the Space Grant Summer Undergraduate Research Program.  Selection based on grade point average, test scores, personal essays, recommendations, and academic and long term goals. Women & under-represented minorities are strongly encouraged to apply.

NAME: McKelvey Foundation Entrepreneurial Scholarship

AWARD: Up to $10,000 per year

CRITERIA: Graduating senior of U.S. high school or home school program, must attend four-year college or univ. within the 50 states, OWN & OPERATE A BUSINESS FOR AT LEAST 1 YEAR (non-profits OK), have at least one paid employee, have sales revenue (unless non-profit), submit a completed online application, provide documentation of the above when requested, agree to participate in a telephone interview if selected as a finalist, winners must attend the summer e-Venture program (June 2009, St. Louis, MO).  For an information sheet look under McKelvey in scholarship application drawers, or go to: www.mckelveyfoundation.org .

NAME:  Intertribal Timber Council - Truman D. Picard Scholarship - Native American/Alaskan Natural Resource Students

AWARD:  $1,500 per award

CRITERIA:  Native American /Alaskan seniors who will pursue studies in Natural Resources.  Evidence of validated enrollment in a federally recognized tribe or Alaska Native Corporation.  For more information go to www.itcnet.org .

NAME: The Princeton Prize in Race Relations

AWARD: Up to $1,000 for particularly note worthy work

CRITERIA:  Any student currently enrolled in grades 9 – 12 who has been actively involved in a volunteer activity in the last 12 months that has had a significant, positive impact on race relations – broadly defined – in his or her school or community.

NAME:  The Olympia Choral Society

AWARD:  One or more at $1,500 

CRITERIA: Seniors who intend to study vocal/choral in college, however, applicant does not have to major in vocal/choral music, just study and/or participate.  Selection will be based on: vocal audition, vocal experience in high school, community involvement, GPA (must be 2.5 or higher), two letters of recommendation, personal statement and college(s) to which applicant has applied.

NAME: IT’S ALWAYS SOMETHING Teen Writing Contest – Grades 9-12

Gilda’s Club Seattle

AWARD: Two Grand Prize @ $2,500, several second place @ $1,000, and six runners up @ $500 each.

CRITERIA:  Writing contest for grades 9 – 12.  This contest is sponsored by Gilda’s Club of Seattle which provides a supportive meeting place for people of all ages who are living with cancer and their family, & friends.  Students from grades 9-12 are invited to share their stories about cancer in personal essays of 500 to 2,000 words.  Student stories can be about their own experience of a personal diagnosis or about their experience with a diagnosis of a loved one, a schoolmate, friend, or perhaps even about cancer in the abstract as it relates to them.

NAME:  WAVE  -Washington Award for Vocational Excellence 2009

AWARD:  Grants for up to two full years of tuition, services & fees.

CRITERIA:  Only one student may be nominated from Capital for the WAVE Scholarship.  Must be state resident enrolled in state high school, skill center, or public community or technical college, and graduate high school by June 30 of the award year.  Must have completed a minimum of 360 hours in a single approved vocational program.  You may check with your Pod counselor, or vocational teacher here at Capital or at New Market to see if you qualify.

NAME:  The Evergreen State College Scholarship Packet

AWARD:  Approximately 30 different scholarships

CRITERIA: You MUST apply for these scholarships by Feb. 2 and be applying for admission to The Evergreen State College prior to the March 1 Priority Date.

 

 

DUE DATE:  February 2, 2009 NAME:  Tuskegee Airmen Scholarship Fund

AWARD:  40 at $1,500, and one at $20,000.

CRITERIA:  High school students who will graduate, or have graduated in the year 2008-2009, and who have a GPA of at least 3.0.   Forty  (40) scholarships of $1,500 will be available in 2009.  The $1,500 awards are for one year only.  One (1) $20,000 Pratt & Whitney award will be presented to a scholar who can demonstrate a sincere aptitude for and pursuit of a career in aviation, aerospace technology or research.  This four-year award will be paid in increments of $5,000 per year and the student must maintain a 2.5 GPA.  This scholarship is open to students of all ethnicities, but since the scholarship sponsors are African-American aviators who are veterans of WWII, they encourage qualifying African American students to apply.

NAME: KFC Colonel’s Scholars

AWARD: Up to $5,000 per year for tuition, fees, etc.

CRITERIA: Online information and application at: www.kfcscholars.org.  Graduating senior maintaining a cumulative minimum GPA of 2.75 or higher, who will enroll in public, in-state college/university with a start date no later than 9/30/09, who is pursuing a bachelor’s (4-year) degree, and is a U.S. citizen

NAME:  Washington State PTA Financial Grants

AWARD:  $2,000 to recipients entering four-year college, and $1,000 to recipients entering two-year community college, vocational-technical school, or other accredited post-secondary school.

CRITERIA: Graduating senior 1) financial need 2) academic performance

NAME:  Elks Vocational Grant Program Scholarship 

AWARD:  Several ranging from $900 to $1,500

CRITERIA: Must be a graduating senior & U.S. citizen and must be seeking a Certificate, Diploma, or Associates Degree at an accredited Vocational/Technical School or Community College.  Do not apply if you are planning to use a two year degree as a stepping stone to a 4 yr. college bachelor’s degree.  Judging will be on Grades, Skills, Motivation, Financial Need, Resourcefulness, Patriotism, Citizenship, Personality, Neatness and Completeness of Application.

NAME: SAMMY 2009 -“Scholar Athlete Milk Mustache of the Year”

Award Program

AWARD:  25 winners receive $7,500 scholarship each & all-expense paid trip to Disney Wide World of Sports

CRITERIA:   NO applications here!  You MUST apply online at www.bodybymilk.com  .  Applications will only be accepted until March 6, 2009. Seniors, scholar athletes, legal residents.  You may nominate yourself, or have a teacher, coach, counselor, principal, parent or relative nominate you.   Judging will be based on five criteria: 35% academic performance, 35% athletic excellence, 15% leadership, 10% community service, and 5% milk experience.

NAME:  Ewing C. Kelly Scholarship                                 

AWARD: $2,500 ea. scholarship

CRITERIA:  Seniors will be judged on academic merit, extra-curricular achievements, both scholastically and in their community, and financial need.  Must be accepted or have an application pending at an institution of higher learning public or private, and have a composite score of 20 or more on the ACT or a composite score of 840 or more on the SAT and must be a citizen or have a green card.

NAME: HP (Hewlett Packard) Scholars (African Amer., Latino, or Native Amer.)

AWARD: $3,000 per yr. for 4 yrs., plus an HP laptop, printer, & PDA, plus possible summer internships w/ Hewlett Packard

CRITERIA: Be a graduating high school senior enrolling as a full-time first-year student into University of Washington, University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), North Carolina A&T, or Morgan State University, and majoring in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Electrical Engineering.  Be an underrepresented minority student (African American, Latino or Native American).  Be able to legally work full time in the United States at the time of application. NAME:  BECU Foundation Scholarship

AWARD:  Twenty five at $2,500 each

CRITERIA:  Applicants must be, or become a member of the Boeing Employees Credit union by opening a savings acctount.   Must have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and be seniors who will attend college, university, community college, or technical college full-time in 2009/2010.  Selection is based on community/school service, leadership potential, and academic achievement. NAME:  Sound Credit Union Scholarship

AWARD: Five (5) at $1,000 each

CRITERIA:  You must be senior in good standing. You must have an account in your own name six months prior to the scholarship deadline (account must be open and active by October 17, 2008) to be eligible for consideration. You must maintain a 3.0 GPA through senior year.

NAME:  Thurston County Cattlewomen Beef Scholarship 

AWARD: $500

CRITERIA:  Graduating senior in a Thurston County high school enrolling in a two or four year college or technical school in fall 2008.  Must be an active member of a Thurston County 4-H or FFA organization in the Beef project area, or in a Jr. Breed Association.

NAME: Seafair Scholarship Program for Young Women

AWARD: Varies

NAME:  Seattle Mariners Women’s Club (Bev & Wes Stock Scholarship)

AWARD:  1 @ $1,000

CRITERIA:   Merit based scholarship for a graduating senior from WA state planning to pursue an ATHLETIC-RELATED CAREER and attend a college or university in the coming academic year.  Will be given to a deserving athlete who displays good character both on and off the playing field, no matter what sport.  Must submit essay, transcript, three letters of recommendation. Selection based on merit: curriculum, GPA, community service.
