Fine Arts Department Philosophy
This department believes that education in the arts is a vital component of the high school curriculum. All students should be provided an opportunity to develop an appreciation of the arts through hands-on experiences. Art instruction should challenge the intellectual, creative, and expressive powers of each student. Encouragement should be given to all students to strive for their personal level of excellence and recognition should be given when this is achieved.Fine Arts Department Objectives
To provide an instructional program in the basic skills and understandings of art concepts, media, tools, and equipment.To provide sequential learning experiences in the arts and opportunities for independent study in particular areas.
To encourage students in seeing their art projects as contributing to the home, school, and community environments.
MUSIC

This course is the third in the Theatre Arts series. It is designed for the student seriously interested in theatre. Areas covered in depth include: theatre history (from ancient Greece to the present), the reading of plays, theatre evaluation, and acting in period styles (Greek, Shakespearean, and Contemporary). The attendance of two live theatre events outside Capital High School is required. Students will create projects centering on topics discussed in class as well as memorizing scenes and performing on stage. This course will not count as an English credit.
Theatre Production

This course is for those students wishing to work in areas concentrated on in the Theatre I, II, and III sequence. This class takes all elements worked on in theory and puts them to use. Students will write and direct monologues, short scenes and one-act plays to be performed for student audiences. They will learn how to produce a theatre production with a given budget. There is an emphasis on in-class activities (improvisation, building skills) and outside play attendance. This course will not count as an English credit.
IB Theatre Arts

This yearlong course is one of the IB elective choices for students pursuing an IB Diploma or Certificate with an interest in the dramatic arts. This course has an emphasis on performance, technical aspects of the art form, theatre history, (from ancient Greece to the present), and acting in period styles. Areas covered in depth include: vocabulary, roles in the theatre, movement, acting, theatre evaluation, play reading, and scenic and costume design. Students will be involved everyday in some performance-based activity. There is an emphasis on memorization, working as a team, individual thought and classroom attendance. Emphasis on the knowledge of color, fabrics, construction materials, as well as writing and expressing ideas in front of a group are essential. This course will not count as an English credit.

This humanities course is designed to give a student an introduction to the world's major civilizations by examining their artistic achievements, history, and culture. This course creates opportunities to view works of art, listen to music, and read literature in historical and cultural contexts. Attention will be focused on works of art in the broadest sense, works that reflect the central values and beliefs of a particular culture and historical moment. The class will focus its study on Ancient Egypt and Greece, Classical and Hellenistic Greece, the Roman Empire, and Byzantine and Islamic Civilizations.

This humanities course is designed to give a student an introduction to the world's major civilizations by examining their artistic achievements, history, and culture. This course creates opportunities to view works of art, listen to music, and read literature in historical and cultural contexts. Attention will be focused on works of art in the broadest sense, works that reflect the central values and beliefs of a particular culture and historical moment. The class will focus its study on Early Middle Ages and the Romanesque, the Gothic and Late Middle Ages, Renaissance and Mannerist Italy, and the Renaissance in the North.

This humanities course is designed to give a student an introduction to the world's major civilizations by examining their artistic achievements, history, and culture. This course creates opportunities to view works of art, listen to music, and read literature in historical and cultural contexts. Attention will be focused on works of art in the broadest sense, works that reflect the central values and beliefs of a particular culture and historical moment. The class will focus its study on the Baroque Age, the 18th Century, Romanticism and Realism and the Belle …poque.
VISUAL ART
Calligraphy (Beginning/Advanced)

This is an elective course in which the art of fine writing is developed. Calligraphy is a form of freehand writing in which the beauty enhances the message and pleases the understand eye.
Drawing (Beginning/Advanced)

Prerequisite: Advanced, teacher approval
Length: 1 trimester (Advanced level may be repeated)
Grade level: 9, 10, 11, 12
Students will learn about basic drawing techniques while becoming proficient in analyzing form, line, texture, and positive and negative shapes. This course will teach students to become more visually aware of the things around them.
Watercolor Painting (Beginning/Advanced)

Prerequisite: Advanced, Beginning Watercolor or teacher approval (Advanced level may be repeated)

Students will learn basic color theory, watercolor painting techniques involving composition, texture, and the use of watercolor tools. The advanced class will build on skills learned in Beginning Watercolor.
Ceramics (Beginning/Advanced)

Prerequisite: Advanced, Beginning Ceramics with grade “B” or better
Length: 1 trimester
Grade level: 9, 10, 11, 12 (limit 2 trimesters per year) Advanced may be repeated.

Students will be introduced to hand building and wheel-thrown pottery. They will learn to sculpt in clay and learn the principles of glazing and ceramic decoration. The advanced class will build on the skills learned in Beginning Ceramics.
General Art I, II

This is an elective course in which students will explore the basic principles of design, composition and color by drawing, collage and painting. Students will learn and practice basic techniques and explore their own creativity.
